MASTITIS / CLOGGED DUCTS
Massage salve into the affected area. Optionally, you can place a hot compress over the area for a few minutes for further penetration and circulation. Then, while deeply working the tissue with your hand, either hand-express milk or use a pump.
It is very important for the milk to be actively expressed while massaging the clogged duct. This can be difficult to coordinate, especially if the duct is clogged beneath where the flange fits over your nipple. You may have success getting into a very hot shower while hand-expressing.
Be prepared for a moderate to significant amount of pain while working out a clogged duct. If you’re able to catch your clogged duct early, and be vigilant about performing this massage with the poke root and castor oil until the clog is opened, you have a high chance of avoiding mastitis. Remember, the pain of mastitis is markedly worse than a clogged duct, so go to the exact spot it hurts most and do your best!
***Try to leave the salve on for 20-40 minutes if possible, and then use soap to thoroughly wash it off before your next nursing session.
Other tips: supplement with Sunflower Lecithin. Here is a link to where I purchase mine! It has been shown to be extremely effective at preventing clogged ducts. It’s nice to take immediately after birth as a precautionary measure, because when the milk first come in there is a higher risk of clogs.
